How Does Clean Eating Help Weight Loss?
WORKING WITH YOUR BODY—NOT AGAINST IT—TO LOSE WEIGHT
Your body’s digestive system has evolved over the millennia into an amazingly complex system that is still not fully understood by scientists today due to the unique nature of everyone’s gut bacteria. Inside of your digestive tract live around 500 different species —some good, some unhealthy. For weight loss and radiant health the good bacteria need to out-number the unhealthy so your digestive system is both effective and efficient. If your current diet is full of sugars, alcohol, caffeine and a large amount of animal proteins, it’s likely that your gut bacteria are not as well balanced
As well as this there is abundant evidence which shows our digestive systems are not well adapted to process the chemical cocktail that we ingest from today’s food. Your great-grandparent’s diet was naturally ‘clean’ for the amount of food additives back then was almost zero. Over the last 60 years, especially in the last 15 years, the amount of additives used by food manufacturers has dramatically increased. Your body took millennia to evolve: it hasn’t had time to adapt to these chemicals and, to me, it’s madness to do so.
In the past, food additives were primarily preservatives to keep food edible for a longer period of time. Now additives are used to change the taste, texture, smell and look of the food. The vast majority of food manufacturers have created brands that we have all bought into. These brands aren’t about creating increasingly healthier food: they are a means for the food manufacturers to maximise their profits.
Worryingly, processed foods labelled ‘low-fat’ or ‘healthy’ are even more manipulated than other foods. Let me give you an example: following is the list of ingredients from a bar marketed as being ‘a healthy choice’. Please note I could find you hundreds of examples like this: this one is simply typical of a food promoted to help weight-loss.
Go Ahead Raspberry Slice: Wheat Flour, Fruit Filling (36%) [Sultanas, Currants, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Sugar, Dextrose Monohydrate, Humectant (Glycerine), Raspberry Concentrate, Wheat Bran, Gelling Agent (Pectin), Citric Acid, Malic Acid, Rice Flour, Acidity Regulators (Sodium Citrate, Calcium Citrate), Natural Flavourings], Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Glazing Agent [Glucose Syrup, Dried Skimmed Milk, Modified Potato Starch], Maltodextrin, Whey Solids, Natural Flavourings, Dextrose Monohydrate, Salt, Raising Agents (Disodium Diphosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Ammonium Bicarbonate).
As well as the chemicals, there are 7 (yes, seven!) different forms of sugar and potato starch too. Yuck! As you will learn, sugar is far more harmful to weight gain than fat.
Cleaning Eating alone will help you lose weight initially, and when combined with letting go of your negative emotions about food as well as understanding portion sizes and hunger triggers, you will lose weight easily and reach and stay at your natural, healthy weight.
EATING A CLEAN DIET: YES IT CAN BE VERY TASTY TOO
It’s true that eating a Clean Diet may take a little more time and energy than throwing a ready-meal into the microwave, but the taste is so much better and you know exactly what’s in your food. On my weight-loss program I help people experiment with batch cooking and after even a couple of weeks you will have more energy, this is not so hard to do.
What if you fancy something like a MacDonalds Hamburger? You can take lean minced beef, an egg, finely chopped onion, some herbs, salt and pepper mash it all up, shape it and fry in just a little coconut oil or ghee and you’ll have a burger that is both ‘clean’ and a has a real taste instead of one that comes from the food flavourings.
